Slop is not merely bad work. Bad work fails at something; slop has stopped trying to succeed at anything in particular.
The word arrived to describe a certain kind of machine output, but it names something older: the product that is optimized for the metric and indifferent to the thing the metric was meant to track.
To notice slop is already to have a standard. That is the small hopeful fact hiding inside the complaint.
